University Hall

Presidents and administrations of Brown University have had peculiar tastes in the past. For instance, President Manning once admitted to taking part in a midnight raid of old Joseph Curwen’s smuggling operation in Pawtucket, a story that many believed, if only because his eyes bore images of ghosts best left unsummoned. But even more strange and shocking is the rumor of a President of the College so corrupt, strange, and degenerate that the University erased all mention of his name and administration. Long before the red-banded fascists of Germany made popular book-burning, this President supposedly led strange rites in Manning Chapel, defaced countless treasures of the Rockefeller Library on its very steps, and carried a queerly-shaped crystal to various obscure and occult locations on campus, from the Pembroke Seal to the Annmary Brown Memorial.
