“Can I help you?”
“Yes, Cataloging Services sent me here. Last night I looked up a book entitled ‘The Fire Within the Eye’ on Josiah, wrote down this call number, and went to find it in the stacks. This is the book I found in its place.”
“Ah damn, they’ve done it again, eh? Well I’m glad you found it.”
“I’m sorry, but I don’t see how finding out the incompetence of the Cataloging Staff is a good thing.”
“Oh, I didn’t mean them. I meant Them. Stick around books long enough and you’ll notice them switching things, stealing things, ruining things... Don’t take it personally. It’s not just you.”
“Look, I need to know how to get my book, it’s vital for my research.”
“A word of advice: These days, don’t get too attached to knowledge. There’s too much for you to have it all, and it has a knack for eluding you just when you begin to need it ‘vitally.’ That’s as good advice as you’ll ever get from old Roderick Williams here.”
“So what should I do, Mr. Williams?”
“Check the Rock, ask Josiah nicely and he might lead you to the book.”
